I came accross this website while looking for the song Green Fields of France (Willie McBride). I always have tears in my eyes when I hear that song, and now after looking over this site I have even more. I also have great memories as my Grandfather was at Galipoli.Looking at yellow and faded old photos.
As an ex serving naval man, I apreciate and respect everything about this site. Thank you. Dont forget Australia day. I dont know if there are any WW1 vets left downunder.

Found your site whilst researching for a project on war memorials and spent far longer than I had time for looking at it! Well done on an excellent, informative and balanced site.

What a way to get caught! My father, Walter Bailey (Border Reg., among others) was at Ypres detailed to collect a box of ammo in the dark. He was hemmed down for several hours--and then crawled back to what he thought was his trench, only to find it full of Germans. An enemy corporal was ordered to take him to a temporary POW camp a few miles down the road. On the way, the pair looked in at a few shelled-out pubs & got drunk. They eventually reached the camp ---with Dad carrying the German's rifle. He often wondered what happened to the corporal, but I guess his senior officers were not too happy....Dad spent the rest of the war at Lille Barracks, where he and his comrades often "lost" German shell detonators destined for the front.
